Project idea

A climbing hall located near the university with direct reference to the newly planned Biotech area, featuring a folded roof structure that forms different areas like knots in a rope as a concept of compression.

Project description

The Faltwerk is a climbing hall placed near the university with a direct connection to the newly planned Biotech area. The positioning picks up existing axes from public transport and complements the neighborhood connections from north and east. Two main axes enable crossing and arriving by the shortest route. The building divides the site diagonally into three zones: on the left a quiet green zone for relaxation, on the right an active zone with extensive offerings, and in the middle the climbing hall with a sunken courtyard as an interactive center. The geometry of the building derives from a folded line oriented to the width of surrounding buildings. The three highest folds form the three main usage areas: lead climbing, bouldering, and training. In the connecting core, sanitary rooms and changing rooms are bundled. After arrival in the foyer, the middle part functions as a connecting joint with access to all three areas and to a café with outdoor seating. Where the basement is not excavated, activity shifts one floor higher onto the accessible roof, where an outdoor climbing area and a calisthenics park for warming up and training are located.

Technical information

Site plan at 1:500, surrounding plan at 1:2000, sections at 1:200, elevations at 1:200, ground floor and floorplan at 1:200,
The building features folded roof structures constructed out of reinforced concrete includes cobiax to reduce the weight of the roof as the fifth facade itself. Glass facades define the spaces beneath the folds and are built as mullion and transom facade. A curtain wall made from stretched metal sheets provides protection from direct sunlight and the heat, but still enables visual relations to the outside and allows indirect light to filter through. The lower floor is cut into the terrain and creates a sunken courtyard. The projects outdoor area includes a skatepark/pumptrack, calisthenics area, multipurpose sports court, table tennis courts, and seating steps.
