Project idea

A leisure sports center in Mladá Boleslav designed to serve as a multifunctional sports and recreational facility, integrating climbing, fitness, and ball sports. The primary objective is to act as a functional and spatial interface between two contrasting zones: a busy urban area to the east and the natural bio-corridor of the Jizera River to the west. The building works as an acoustic barrier, shielding the newly proposed recreational park from city noise, while seamlessly integrating existing cycling routes to connect the city with nature.

Project description

The architectural concept develops from a basic rectangular form into a complex volumetric composition. With a total usable area exceeding 4,550 m², the building is divided into three distinct volumes: a large multifunctional sports hall featuring a prominent outdoor climbing wall, a fitness center, and a generous central walk-through foyer with a café. The heavily glazed foyer acts as the transparent heart of the building, providing a direct visual and pedestrian axis connecting the city with the park. The visual identity relies on the contrast between solid, translucent, and transparent surfaces.

Technical information

The structural system employs a hybrid construction combining reinforced concrete and steel elements. The main sports hall uses a large-span steel structure while the fitness center and ancillary spaces utilize a concrete frame system. The project includes floor plans at 1:n.p. scale, cross-sections through the staircase at 1:300, site sections at 1:750, south and west elevations at 1:300, and HVAC/MEP concept diagrams at 1:300. To ensure energetic sustainability and indoor comfort, the north and east facades utilize translucent polycarbonate walls for glare-free daylight, while the glazed sections are shielded by expanded metal cladding acting as a stationary sunshade.
