Project idea

The concept 'Tide & Trade' represents the dynamic relationship between the natural rhythm of the river (tide) and the economic rhythm of the marketplace (trade). Just like the tide flows in and out, the trade and human activity of the Fishery Ghat also rise and fall through time — daily, seasonally, and economically.

Project description

Located in Lusai Kanya, at the mouth of the Rajkhali and on the bank of the Karnaphuli, Chattogram, the project occupies approximately 11 acres. The design integrates celestial opening, modular design, and connection to the river as key conceptual drivers. The program includes wholesale and retail shops, auction space, cutting and processing areas, packaging rooms, ice plant, cold storage, fish landing zones, loading/unloading areas, and a mosque. Platforms and decks rise and fall with the tide for loading/unloading zones, while circulation flow mimics fluid water movement for goods and people. The roof form and canopy follow a wave or tide-inspired rhythm to shelter trading spaces. Public edges become accessible during low tide as active gathering spaces post-trade.

Technical information

Structural Strategy: Lightweight steel truss structure supporting fiber tensile roof for long-span coverage ensuring unobstructed circulation and visual openness. Steel is used for span efficiency and modular erection. Fiber tensile provides lightness, daylight diffusion, and reduced heat gain. Environmental adaptation includes anti-corrosive coating for humid marine conditions, roof slope and drainage designed for heavy rainfall. Foundation consists of raised RCC plinth to protect against tidal surge and flooding, with proper sub-drainage to keep the market floor dry. Material palette uses natural, weathered textures with durable and functional finishes.
