STU Courtyard Repurposing

Idea projektu

The project STU Courtyard Repurposing aims to highlight the existing but under designed courtyard of the STU Bratislava Campus. The main idea of the design is to incorporate the public into the courtyard whilst still taking into account the privacy of staff and students. The building consists of two main levels with one being a public level and the other being an institutional level. The public level is where all the public interaction will take place and the institutional level will be where the rectorates offices, research centre and presentation centre will be located.

Popis projektu

The site plan design refers to the existing courtyard of the campus. The parking area is located underneath the building due to the existing basement parking. The entrance zone is placed on the axis of the existing parks to the north-west and the south-west. The site still has large open spaces which could be developed in to sports fields etc. There is a clear division into three main functional areas, i.e.: a academic area semi-underground, a presentation centre in the middle of the building and a raised public area which is on the north-west to north-east axis. Each part is separated from the other thanks to the levels. Between these three main parts the top level becomes pedestrian paths that allow to get into the parkings areas and academic areas. Even though the presentation centre divides the academic areas and labs, they are connected through the circulation space on the south-eastern side.

Technické informace

The main materials are steel, concrete and timber cladding. The main construction system is a column and beam system, the entire structure is designed on a grid which includes the basement.

STU Courtyard Repurposing

Dear Paul Smale, Your idea of recapitulating the courtyard as a more engaging entity is quite interesting and very good. However it could be elaborated in a way to enhance the 'incorporation' as you said so, by human experience. In this regard, I suggest you bring this idea to a more elaborated level. Meanwhile, the institutional level and the public level could have at least some interactions, so that they are not completely separated. This can underline your main idea. I'm sure you'll find an interesting way.. Also, the building axis can be elongated with certain functions to smoothly connect STU's institutional identity to the city. Please think about human experience point of view, and the activities that will perfectly fit. Wishing you all the best, Sincerely, Banu
