BE-TWIN

Idea projektu

BE- TWIN is an innovative Experimental Primary School designed as an extension of the neighboring pre-existing Public High School of Ipsila Alonia. The pedestrianized axis of Zalongou Str is no longer a border between the two schools but a connecting link that creates a single, larger educational block. The building volumes surround the main school yard with classrooms, acting as a metaphor of the typical Greek urban block that is distinguished by the central inner yard (acalyptos), formed between the apartment buildings (polykatoikia). Introverted as it may seem, this typology is adjusted to the openness of the Finnish educational system, thus introducing a new learning environment for the young students.

Popis projektu

A public library with study spaces, an open-air square and roofs that are used for urban cultivation to strengthen the environmental conscience of the youth suggest an educational program that is rich in extra-curricular activities, which can take place in outdoor spaces as well. The new buildings remain open to the public after the school hours in order to create a gravitational node in the neighborhood that will attract not only students but also local residents during the evening time. This seemingly reserved block showcases the open character of the building program in a way that helps the local community experience the school as a learning space but also as an environment where social interactions take place.

Technické informace

Materials used: reinforced concrete, aluminum (window frames and louvers), nanostructured glass with smart properties (e.g., self-cleaning), recyclable materials such as timber and plywood. The building is equipped with LED lights to minimize energy consumption.

BE-TWIN

Dear Konstantinos Smigadis; First of all, I would like to congratulate you for your efforts and studies. The drawings are unreadable and quite faint. Also, the names of the spaces are not written. That's why interpreting your solutions is challenging. But as far as I can see, I will comment on something and ı will give some questions to get you think your project again. • I found your project idea successful. I find the idea of designing the "primary school as an extension of pre-existing public high school", designing it as a “single, larger educational block” and “Adjusting the typology of finnish educational system” positive. However, is it appropriate for high school and primary school students to have close relationships in terms of educational psychology? • What activities will the local community do here after the school hours? This issue needs to be clarified. Otherwise, it is not possible to understand what kind of social interaction would be here. Also, the suitability of the spaces for proposed social activities can not be understood. • I think the relationship of the building/work area with the environment should be better expressed. We can not see the environmental data on the project. Why this Project is needed? Why the Project idea is important for this field or for the education system? The answers should be better expressed. • The unqualified garden of the existing school is taken into account within the scope of the Project. However, I could not see any suggestions for the improvement of sports fields. Sports activities for children and young people are very important for their physical and mental development. • Do you think bus routes and schedules can be designed according to students? The urban networks in Patras is suitable and safe for for bicycle and pedestrian access? İf its not, ı think the pedestrian and vehicle access should be considered again especially for vehicles. it would be beneficial to organize a place where school buses will take students safely. • The first and second floor plans have been presented, but I think the 1st floor plan is actually the ground floor plan… accordingly, if it was misrepresented, it should be corrected. • I recommend to review toilet solutions. For ex. washbasins cannot be used when the door is opened. Moreover, There are toilets that open directly into the working or education spaces. Is this a comfortable and ergonomic choice or is it culturally appropriate? • It would be better to establish the connection between spaces with a hall or corridor. For instance; On the 2nd floor, the toilet, working office, meeting room, classroom (?) spaces are connected eachother by doors. • I recommend you to revise the dimensions, positions and opening directions of the doors. It would be better to use sliding doors and wider doors for crowded places. Especially for such places, it is preferable to open the doors to the outside in order to prevent the negativities that may occur in case of danger.
