This project delivers a well-articulated and contextually rich response to the cultural and architectural heritage of Kadiköy, Istanbul. The gallery’s 15,000 m² program is thoughtfully distributed across four floors, offering a mix of flexible exhibition areas, a modern art space, a conference room, a library, and integrated public zones—each tailored to support community engagement and the dynamic expression of contemporary and classical art. A key strength of the proposal lies in its respectful yet confident approach to heritage integration. The new metal structure is designed to be structurally independent of the adjacent historic building, protecting it from load-induced stress. This technical strategy demonstrates a clear understanding of conservation principles while allowing for a bold architectural intervention. The sectional relationship between new and old structures, combined with the landscape treatment, creates opportunities for meaningful spatial experiences and visual dialogue. While the architectural language is restrained, it aligns with the project’s emphasis on serving as a backdrop to artistic and cultural content. A minor suggestion could involve more detailed articulation of internal wayfinding and environmental control strategies (lighting, humidity, temperature) essential for museum-quality display. Overall, this is a highly competent and respectful civic design that elevates the role of architecture as both a vessel for art and an enabler of cultural continuity.
