The idea of this project is to conserve and adapt historical building in Ethiopia which have a significant value on Ethiopian architecture to the new construction technology
The Saint George Terrace is designed as a small free standing tower. The building mass is broken down into three similar volumes and arranged around a central spiral staircase there by giving each apartment on every floor its own house-like outline. The circular wall of the central shaft also appears in the layout of the apartments creating a dynamic convex, corridor space at the entrance and a static, concave back of the living room. The Saint George Terraces by Henri Chomette show how a variety of spatial situations can be created even with simple and standardized elements.
This project presents a thoughtful approach to conserving and adapting historical buildings in Ethiopia, integrating significant elements of Ethiopian architecture with contemporary construction technologies. Technically, the project encompasses a total area of 1,000 square meters, with a built-up area of 305 square meters, designated for apartment use. While the conceptual framework effectively bridges historical and modern architectural practices, further development in detailing, material selection, and sustainable design strategies would enhance the project's feasibility and impact.
Overall, "New Design in Old Structure – St. George Terrace" offers a commendable vision for integrating heritage conservation with contemporary residential design. With additional refinement, it has the potential to serve as a model for context-sensitive urban development in Ethiopia.
