Project narrative Kotmale project is a comprehensive initiative designed to address the multifaceted challenges posed by large-scale infrastructural developments in the context of the Anthropocene epoch. This project has engaged in extensive data collection and analysis, focusing on environmental, cultural, and socio-economic dimensions to ensure a holistic understanding of the regional dynamics.

Project statement The Kotmale project, situated in the transformative era of the Anthropocene, aims to harmonize the interaction between human activity and the natural environment. Driven by large-scale infrastructure developments, this initiative focuses on sustainable growth and ecological stewardship within a culturally rich landscape. Leveraging local and historical insights, the project integrates innovative practices and educational elements to foster resilience and rejuvenation. Methodologically, it employs a holistic analysis that blends ecological, social, and structural considerations, ensuring that interventions enhance both cultural heritage and environmental integrity. The overarching goal is to cultivate a living landscape that supports sustainable livelihoods, enhances community engagement, and serves as a learning model for adaptive ecological practices.

Data Collection- Environmental Data- Included hydrological studies, soil analysis, and ecological surveys to assess the impacts of reservoir construction on local ecosystems and biodiversity. Cultural Data- Ethnographic fieldwork and historical research were conducted to gauge the depth of cultural heritage and identify the critical elements of traditional knowledge and practices. Socio-economic Data- Surveys and demographic studies helped evaluate community needs, economic shifts, and social dynamics due to infrastructural changes. Methodologies Used in Data Collection and Analysis Qualitative Interviews and Ethnography- Gathered insights from local communities to understand their perceptions and interactions with the landscape. Statistical Analysis to socio-economic data to identify trends and potential socio-economic impacts resulting from the project interventions. Integration with Design/Planning Guidelines- The analysis was systematically integrated into the planning process through adaptive management strategies, ensuring that the design reflects both the current needs and future projections of the Kotmale region. Environmental data shaped the conservation efforts and restoration strategies, ensuring ecological resilience. Cultural insights influenced the design to enhance heritage conservation and community engagement, while socio-economic findings guided infrastructure development to support sustainable livelihoods.
