REDEVELOPMENT OF SYLHET OLD CENTRAL JAIL AREA (An opportunity to create an urban activity area for Sylhet city)

Idea projektu

Modification of the Central jail area by analyzing context, history, character of the settlement, user expectations, and the city's contemporary context. The appearance of the routes can be improved, thereby improving pedestrian and vehicular movement. Relocation of the Central Jail paved the way for open space and a park. This even created an opportunity to provide recreational facilities and public services, such as a museum. This will depict the historical timeline of the place and the story of the prisoners' jail life. Nodes connected to the heritage sites are considered the most complex form. If the central jail area is opened as public space, then it can be the central node to accessibly ensuring breathing space in Sylhet, which is becoming extinct due to urbanization, the distance between city residents and nature has increased. Urban greenery is the only way to bridge this gap between people and nature.

Popis projektu

The project delves into the intricate anatomical relationship between the cityscape, architecture, and culture of Sylhet, a region deeply intertwined with the history of its inhabitants. It seeks to unravel the historical narrative of old Sylhetians while examining the evolving human activities and contemporary needs shaping its urban fabric. By understanding the symbiotic connection between the built environment and cultural dynamics, the project aims to inform the design of spaces that embody the essence of this unique locale. At its core, the exploration encompasses the essence of Sylhet's urban identity and the rich cultural heritage passed down through generations. By excavating layers of history, traditions, and societal norms, the project seeks to unearth the underlying spirit of the place, enabling a deeper comprehension of its spatial needs and architectural manifestations. Through rigorous analysis and synthesis, the project endeavors to envision a contemporary architecture that resonates with the ethos of Sylhet. This entails not only a functional approach to urban planning but also a profound respect for the intangible heritage ingrained within the city's fabric. By bridging the past with the present, the aim is to craft spaces that honor tradition while accommodating the evolving aspirations of its inhabitants. Ultimately, the project serves as a catalyst for re-imagining Sylhet's built environment in alignment with its cultural legacy and contemporary exigencies. It seeks to foster a dialogue between tradition and innovation, fostering a sustainable urban future that cherishes the values passed down from generation to generation.

REDEVELOPMENT OF SYLHET OLD CENTRAL JAIL AREA (An opportunity to create an urban activity area for Sylhet city)

PROJECT: REDEVELOPMENT OF SYLHET OLD CENTRAL JAIL AREA (An opportunity to create an urban activity area for Sylhet city) STUDENT: RIDAY SAHA INSTITUTION: Bangladesh University, Department of Architecture, Dhaka COUNTRY: Bangladesh SEMIFINAL JUROR: Wandile Sibandze 1. STRENGTHS: Interpreting the memory of a place in terms of heritage architecture and the importance of its preservation (specific understanding of the unique environment) convincingly. The subject matter is well understood and close to the candidate's ‘heart’ and sensibilities. He presented the realities of the chosen site well and with insight. 2. SHORTCOMINGS: The heritage architecture is of a colonial period and its linear form forces a unidirectional exhibition\narrative; therefore, ‘forcing’ the users/visitors to see and feel what the architect wants them to see and feel. This he proposes without entering into the merits of such an approach. 3. CREDIBILITY OF ARGUMENT: Good investigation in terms of relevant events (timeline) but could benefit from precedent studies representing similar transformations. 4. DESIGN RESOLUTION: The masterplan, landscape, and interiors have been well illustrated but are constrained by the monolithic spaces and volumes; consequently, creating a monolithic phenomenon. 5. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Acceptable. 6. GENERAL COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: 6.1. Consider creating a focal point at the intersection of the two axis; this could enhance hierarchy and legibility. 6.2. Show perspectives for the new proposed buildings. 6.3. Show precedent-study. 6.4. Consider creating varying volumes along the narrative space to enrich phenomenology.
