Dignitas: Comprehensive Care Center for Women Survivors of Human Trafficking

Idea projektu

Human trafficking, especially sexual exploitation, is a severe form of violence against women in Mexico. In Monterrey, there are no specialized centers for recovery of women survivors, leaving them without a safe space to heal and rebuild their lives. This project proposes the design of a comprehensive support center that promotes dignity, autonomy, and well-being for its users, offering integrated services including housing, education, and vocational training. Inspired by the stages of cultivation, the spacial journey accompanies women throughtout their recovery process, from preparation to harvest. With empathy as a foundation, interior design becomes a tool for support and healing, creating spaces intended to care for, dignify, and empower–proposing a new model of refuge in Mexico.

Popis projektu

The center will be structured to address all dimensions of well-being: health, education, economic development, social integration, and emotional stability. Each space is designed to provide dignified and functional conditions that promote recovery and empowerment. The buildings designed are: administrative building, medical building, group housing building, family housing building, culinary workshop building and coffee shop building. This center is a starting point, a safe environment where every woman rediscovers her worth and finds tools for her future. Here, dignity is not given back because it was never lost; it is recognized, strengthened, and becomes the driving force for a new stage of life. In this process, each woman finds her path, step by step, with the necessary support and guidance to build a meaningful future.

Technické informace

The land and its modular buildings offer great potential to be transformed into a center for women survivors of trafficking. Since the buildings are independent, it facilitates a change of use and intervention without requiring total demolition. Most of the buildings are made with cement blocks, which provide durability. Some spaces have drywall panels for internal partitions. Regarding the floors, ceramic tiles are used indoors to facilitate cleaning, and concrete is used outdoors for its resistance. The roofs vary between concrete slabs and aluminum sheets, depending on the area and the building’s age. All spaces are air-conditioned with centralized systems, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature.

Dignitas: Comprehensive Care Center for Women Survivors of Human Trafficking

The project stands out for its profound empathy and purpose-driven design. By translating the concept of dignity into spatial language, it creates an environment of healing, empowerment, and belonging. The “cultivation stages” metaphor gives structure and emotional rhythm to the user journey, while material and light choices convey care and safety. This is an exceptional example of how interior architecture can restore identity and human strength.

My advice is to expand the narrative of sensory experience—how light, texture, and sound contribute to psychological recovery. Exploring the outdoor-indoor transitions and community interaction areas could enhance the sense of openness and trust. Documenting potential collaborations with social workers or NGOs would also underline the project’s real-world impact.
