The project celebrates the symbiotic relationship between the Dusun community, their natural environment and the sacred spirit of Mount Kinabalu through a design language inspired by the gentle luminescence of fireflies that animate Sabah’s rivers. Sabah’s tourism sector, while central to its economy, faces pressing issues of environmental degradation and unsustainable development particularly within the eco-tourism segment. Popular highland destinations like Kundasang have seen rapid construction that often disregards local ecology, resulting in waste mismanagement and visual pollution that threaten both biodiversity and the authenticity of place. This project responds by proposing an alternative tourism model grounded in regenerative design and indigenous wisdom, positioning architecture as a mediator between people and landscape rather than a form of exploitation. It seeks to celebrate the Dusun community’s deep ecological consciousness, where respect for the mountain (Aki Nabalu), the river and the spirit world forms an inseparable part of daily life. Set within the mist-covered highlands of Kundasang beneath the majestic Mount Kinabalu, this project re-imagines the bond between architecture, culture and ecology through the luminous metaphor of the firefly a small creature whose rhythmic glow has guided generations living along Sabah’s rivers imitating the form of nature to manifesting its living spirit, translating the firefly’s qualities of rhythm, harmony as well as connection into spatial and social expression. The firefly becomes both metaphor and method. Its gentle light symbolizes guidance and collective harmony, mirroring the communal spirit (gotong-royong) that defines Dusun settlements. Each pavilion within the site is conceived as a “glow” a node of learning, gathering or reflection interlinked through pathways that trace the natural topography like flowing trails of light. The architectural arrangement forms a constellation of leaf-like clusters, evoking the image of fireflies resting upon the valley floor. These structures are elevated on timber stilts, minimizing ground disturbance and allowing natural water flow and vegetation beneath, echoing traditional Dusun stilt houses that coexist with the land. By night, the ensemble becomes a constellation of light each pavilion a metaphorical firefly, representing the unity of people and the guiding presence of ancestral spirits. This luminous settlement along Kundasang’s slopes is not only an ecological intervention but a cultural manifestation; a living organism that bridges tradition and modernity, spirit and matter, heritage and innovation.

This project proposes the Kinabalu Eco-Tourism Cultural Heritage Centre at Kampung Mesilau, Sabah designed as a sensitive gateway between the local Dusun community, Mount Kinabalu’s natural landscape and visitors. The project responds to issues of over-tourism, loss of cultural identity and weak integration between tourism and the surrounding ecosystem. The main solution consists of an educational hub, cultural interpretation space, forest canopy trail, small homestay units, riverfront activity area, viewing decks, and passive visitor facilities arranged along the existing river and contour lines. Inspired by the form of fireflies, forest leaves and mountain flow, the architecture uses organic roof forms, timber structures, woven screens, natural ventilation, shaded walkways and rainwater-harvesting canopies. Rather than dominating the site, the buildings sit gently within the landscape, allowing visitors to experience nature, culture, water and local stories through a slow and immersive journey. The project aims to create a balanced eco-cultural destination that supports tourism while protecting the spirit and ecology of Kampung Mesilau.

The structure’s timber skeleton and woven bamboo skin filter daylight in shifting tones, transforming sunlight into a choreography of shadows that echo the flicker of bioluminescent trails. Raised on stilts in respect of the land and hydrological flow, the architecture responds to climate and topography while embodying Dusun vernacular wisdom of coexistence rather than domination. Through its form, material honest and spatial rhythm, the project
transforms architecture into a narrative of light, life and belonging, honoring the enduring
bond between the Dusun people and their sacred mountain. Ultimately,it is a living organism that glows with cultural memory and environmental
awareness. By embodying the firefly’s language of light, it rekindles the dialogue between
human and nature, between ancestral heritage and contemporary sustainability. Within
its gentle radiance, one discovers not only the spirit of the Dusun people but also a vision
for a regenerative Sabah, where architecture becomes both the guardian and the
storyteller of the land.
