The project presents a sensitive and coherent approach to designing a Day Support and Activity Center for people with memory disorders, where architecture is conceived as an extension of the surrounding park landscape in Biłgoraj. The central idea of dissolving boundaries between building and nature is clearly articulated and consistently carried through the spatial, material, and environmental strategies.
The strength of the project lies in its calm and empathetic architectural language. The building avoids formal complexity in favor of clarity, orientation, and legibility-qualities that are particularly appropriate for users with cognitive impairments. The organization around a central courtyard is a strong and effective decision, creating a controlled yet open therapeutic environment that supports both social interaction and moments of quiet retreat.
The relationship between interior and exterior spaces is one of the most successful aspects of the proposal. Large, glazed openings and foldable façade elements allow the building to actively engage with seasonal change and daily rhythms of the park. The courtyard is not only a compositional device but also a meaningful therapeutic landscape, enriched with biodiversity strategies such as habitats, nesting boxes, and native planting, which strengthen the ecological narrative of the project.
The use of timber construction, particularly CLT and GLT systems, reinforces the overall atmospheric and environmental intent. The material choice contributes positively to the warmth and domestic character of the interior spaces while also supporting sustainability goals. The integration of passive and active environmental systems, including heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation, and rainwater management strategies, demonstrates a solid awareness of contemporary ecological design approaches.
Overall, the project successfully balances architectural clarity, therapeutic intent, and environmental sensitivity, resulting in a cohesive and well-resolved proposal.
- While the conceptual relationship between architecture and landscape is very strong, I would encourage a more precise articulation of how users with memory disorders navigate and mentally map the building. Additional clarity in spatial sequencing, landmarks, and orientation cues within the interior would further strengthen the therapeutic value of the design.
- The courtyard is a strong organizing element, but its programmatic activation throughout different times of day and seasons could be developed further. More detailed consideration of how activities shift between indoor and outdoor spaces would enhance its role as a truly active therapeutic core.
- The spatial hierarchy between the two main program zones (day activities and short-term accommodation) could be more clearly differentiated in terms of atmosphere, privacy gradients, and circulation logic.
- Although the environmental strategies are comprehensive and well-integrated, further detailing of their architectural expression, particularly how systems like rainwater management and biodiversity elements are visibly embedded in the spatial experience, would strengthen the connection between concept and perception.
- Finally, the architectural expression, while intentionally calm and restrained, could benefit from slightly stronger spatial differentiation or moments of emphasis to support orientation and memory within the user experience.
Overall assessment:
This is a thoughtful and humane project with a strong conceptual foundation and consistent architectural execution. Its greatest achievement is the sensitivity with which it integrates care, landscape, and architecture into a unified therapeutic environment. Further refinement in spatial legibility and experiential hierarchy would elevate it from a strong conceptual proposal to a more fully resolved architectural statement.
