Soon Nilkhet had became a popular market of books for the extrem demand of surrounding educational institutes. The existing market has over 1700 shops including a kuccha bazar and a 315 years Baqusha masque with graveyard inside . RETHINKING NILKHET BOOK MARKET,Towards development of an urban hub & retail.

This proposal ambitiously reimagines the historic Nilkhet Book Market in Dhaka, aiming to transform it into a vibrant urban hub that harmonizes commercial vitality with cultural preservation. The design thoughtfully addresses the site's challenges, such as congested pathways and unplanned layouts, by proposing a more organized structure that enhances accessibility and user experience. The inclusion of a student gathering space and urban breathing zones demonstrates a commendable effort to create a healthy environment for users and alleviate traffic congestion in the area. A notable strength of the project is its commitment to conserving the 200-year-old Baqusha Mosque, integrating it seamlessly into the new development. This approach respects the site's historical significance while introducing modern amenities. The proposed use of sustainable materials and composite structures indicates an awareness of environmental considerations. However, while the project's vision is clear, further development in architectural detailing and spatial articulation would enhance its feasibility and impact. Detailed plans illustrating circulation, vendor arrangements, and public spaces would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the design's functionality. Overall, this project presents a thoughtful and culturally sensitive approach to urban redevelopment, balancing the preservation of historical elements with the needs of a modern urban marketplace. With further refinement, it holds the potential to serve as a model for similar urban interventions.
