Memoria Viva transforms the former Miguel de Azcuénaga Arsenal into a living memorial where remembrance becomes an active civic experience. Rather than preserving history as a static monument, the project intertwines memory with education, culture, research, landscape, and everyday public life. Inspired by Argentina's national symbols—the Ceibo flower, the Sol de Mayo, and the continuous flow of active memory—the masterplan invites visitors to learn, reflect, gather, and participate in the ongoing pursuit of truth and justice. Through architecture, landscape, and community engagement, the project ensures that memory remains alive across generations.

Active Memory: A Living Archive

This is a journey from absence to action, from detachment to presence, from silence to voice, and from forgotten history to living memory. Every space restores a fragment of what was taken away, allowing visitors to reconnect with the memories of the disappeared, the pain of those who endured, the resilience that refused to fade, and the enduring promise of Nunca Más. Here, architecture does not simply preserve memory; it transforms remembrance into participation, ensuring that every visitor leaves not only remembering the past, but carrying the responsibility to shape a future where it is never repeated.

What happens when a nation loses not only its people, but also its memory? When identities are erased and stories are silenced, remembrance becomes an act of reconstruction. Inspired by Argentina’s Nunca Más (“Never Again”), this project reclaims memory as a living force: the memory of lives taken, the memory of suffering endured, the memory of resilience that persisted, and the memory of a collective vow that such injustice must never return.

The journey begins with truth. Before memory can be restored, it must first be confronted. Exposed concrete, grounded in Brutalist principles, embodies this necessity. Raw, permanent, and unembellished, it refuses to conceal history. It stands as a physical reminder that truth is not optional in the process of remembrance; it is its foundation.

Yet memory is not sustained by truth alone. It must also be carried by identity, culture, and belonging.

The architecture draws from Argentina itself, translating the spirit of the Sol de Mayo into curved, embracing forms that radiate across the site. These masses do not impose; they welcome. They embody a continuous, unfolding remembrance; an active memory that is never complete, never static, but always renewed through education, dialogue, and collective experience.

This dialogue between permanence and humanity continues through materiality. Concrete carries the weight of truth, while locally sourced wood introduces warmth and intimacy, rooted in Argentina’s landscape and craftsmanship. Together, they express both what was lost and what continues to endure.

But where does memory truly live if not in the paths we walk?

The design preserves the site’s original routes as traces of its own history, allowing memory already embedded in the ground to remain intact. From these, secondary and tertiary paths emerge, offering each visitor a personal journey. There is no single narrative here; only individual encounters with absence, reflection, and understanding.

Along these paths, water flows continuously from a central basin, weaving the entire site into one uninterrupted narrative. It represents life, healing, and the persistence of memory. Like memory itself, it refuses stillness, moving constantly forward, connecting past and future through presence.

At the heart of the project stands the Tree of the Disappeared, planted with a native Argentine flowering species. Each bloom becomes a quiet act of remembrance, not as a return of what was lost, but as the return of what was taken from memory itself: identity, dignity, and collective awareness. It transforms absence into presence through nature’s own cycle of renewal.

The journey ultimately extends beyond reflection into action. Educational spaces, workshops, and gathering areas transform remembrance into dialogue, and dialogue into responsibility. Visitors do not remain observers; they become participants in sustaining memory.

Because memory is not something we inherit; it is something we choose to carry. And only when it is carried forward does it become truly alive.

The project occupies a 350-hectare site in Las Talitas, Tucumán, organized around a comprehensive masterplan integrating memorial, educational, cultural, research, commercial, and ecological functions. The design prioritizes universal accessibility through an interconnected network of pedestrian promenades, cycling routes, golf-cart circulation, and barrier-free public spaces.

Landscape strategies include a stormwater retention basin, natural water channels, native wetland vegetation, biodiversity restoration, and permeable surfaces that improve flood resilience while reinforcing the park's contemplative character. Buildings are carefully oriented to maximize natural daylight, cross-ventilation, and visual connections with the landscape. Curved architectural forms inspired by the Sol de Mayo and the Ceibo flower create intuitive circulation while expressing the project's symbolic narrative.

The primary material palette combines exposed concrete, timber, glass, locally sourced stone, and native planting. Warm timber elements symbolize humanity, resilience, and adaptability, while transparent façades emphasize openness in direct contrast to the secrecy of the site's former use. The project balances environmental performance, functional flexibility, and symbolic architectural expression to create a sustainable civic landmark dedicated to memory, education, and collective healing.
