Palliative cancer care in Indonesia is still often misunderstood as giving up or waiting for the end of life, even though it is intended to support quality of life through physical, psychological, social, and spiritual care. This project responds to the limited spatial translation of holistic palliative principles within Indonesian healthcare interiors. The concept of New Axis represents a directed yet dynamic orientation of care. Rather than positioning cancer care along a single treatment-centered path, it introduces multiple interconnected dimensions that support patients and family caregivers throughout changing conditions. The interior guides users from confusion toward clarity and from pressure toward active calm, creating a more controlled and dignified care experience. The project aims to transform the clinic from a primarily medical facility into a holistic restorative environment that supports autonomy, family resilience, spiritual wellbeing, and everyday quality of life.

The project covers approximately 1,730 m² across the ground and second floors of a cancer palliative clinic in Surabaya. Its spatial programme integrates inpatient care, medical support, psychosocial consultation, social and restorative activities, spiritual care, physiotherapy, staff facilities, and clinical support services. A central innovation is the classification of inpatient rooms according to care needs and patient independence: Active Stay Room, Comfort Care Room, High Support Care Room, and VIP Room. Each category provides a different level of accessibility, caregiver support, privacy, stimulation, and restorative ambience. Supporting spaces include a psychosocial consultation room, diversion therapy area, social lounge, windowside silent library, chapel, adoration room, pastoral care room, in-room prayer niches, physiotherapy area, front office, and Central Sterile Supply Department. Together, these spaces support the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of palliative care for both patients and family caregivers.

The interior design prioritizes healthcare safety, accessibility, hygiene, durability, and psychological comfort. Inpatient rooms use electric beds, nurse-call systems, accessible circulation, privacy curtains, personal storage, and caregiver-support furniture according to each room category. Accessible bathrooms apply wheelchair-compatible dimensions, non-slip flooring, corner floor drains, and coved skirting for easier cleaning. Materials include non-porous and chemical-resistant surfaces, antibacterial laminates, water-repellent upholstery, synthetic leather, sintered stone countertops, vinyl roll flooring, and selectively reclaimed wood elements. Lighting combines daylight from gardens and courtyards with soft artificial lighting to maintain visual comfort and circadian support. Acoustic treatments are applied in spiritual spaces, while low-contrast finishes and controlled stimulation support calmer care environments. The CSSD follows a linear separation between soiled, washing, sterile preparation, storage, and supply routes to reduce cross-contamination and improve staff efficiency.
