REHABILITATON CENTER FOR INMATES

Project idea

Egypt, as a developing nation, is actively pursuing new visions and strategies for social progress. One such focus is on improving lives of marginalized groups who often face societal neglect, particularly prisoners, or more humane term "inmates" . Some correctional institutions systems around the world, failed adequately address the rehabilitation needs of inmates. This leads to a high recidivism rate, with many returning to criminal activities after serving their sentences as well as the lack of opportunities for personal growth and positive social interaction contributes. The goal is to better reintegrate these individuals into society upon their release allowing them to become productive, contributing members of the community. workshop provide a more humane sound alternative to traditional prison systems through a better sustaible architectural design. provide enviromentally-friendly spaces and opportunities for inmates to learn valuable skills and trades. This architectural project presents a unique challenge in its user diversity. Each user has specific needs and requires a tailored design approach. There will be strictly controlled and monitored spaces of the facility where movement is restricted, including entrances and other sensitive zones.

Project description

The rehabilitation center design idea, redefines the traditional correctional institution, prioritizing a restorative transformative environment. The design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, juxtaposing formal and organic forms to create sense of serenity and openness. This dynamic interplay of regeneration and contrast fosters a positive atmosphere for both inmates and staff, encouraging personal growth and reintegration into society. Security elements are a integrated, ensuring a balanced ecosystem that supports rehabilitation. Old prisons design uses Linear design, characterized by several rows of parallel multi story and this called "Telephone Pole Layout", which focused on security and restricted inmate movement and this (Prisons) layout actually exacerbated control issues, as Long, linear cell block corridors made it difficult for guards to monitor all inmates While the "Campus layout" is freestanding buildings surrounded by a large ope space, often rectangular layout emphasized communal activities and humane treatment of Inmates The project design is Mixed-Type Layout Hybrid design approach, combining elements of older and modern layouts. Allows for a balance between security considerations and rehabilitation.

Technical information

The rehabilitation center will embrace a concept of regeneration and contrast, departing from the rigid, oppressive design often associated with correctional institutions. The building's massing will feature curved, organic forms, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding landscape. This integration will be enhanced by incorporating green roofs and extensive landscaping, reflecting Biophilic design principles. The structural system will utilize traditional columns and beams for the standard floors. However, the curved green roofs will be supported by a unique combination of V-shaped beams and tree-like columns, creating a visually striking and sustainable element. Departing from the typical underground spaces found in correctional facilities, the center will offer more open-air workshops, inspired by English courtyards, to foster a positive and uplifting environment. Instead of imposing walls, the facility will utilize landscaped hedge screens and strategically placed trees, creating "Green Gains" that stand approximately 50 feet tall. These natural barriers will provide both security and a sense of privacy, while simultaneously enhancing the visual appeal and environmental impact of the center.
