Project idea

Context: In an era marked by digital isolation and shallow social interactions, loneliness has emerged as a global crisis, affecting individuals across all age groups. Drawing inspiration from Jacques Lacan’s "Mirror Stage" theory—which posits that human identity is shaped through meaningful interactions with others—this project seeks to address societal disconnection by fostering spaces for deep, culturally rooted dialogue. Located in Kyrenia, a historic Cypriot city with layered cultural influences, the design integrates vernacular elements (e.g., Cypriot Cumba architecture) with contemporary interventions to create a hub that rekindles communal bonds. Goals: Social Reintegration: Combat loneliness by facilitating face-to-face interactions through shared cultural and historical experiences. Cultural Synthesis: Merge Kyrenia’s diverse heritage (Greek, Ottoman, British) with modern design to reflect collective identity. Spatial Innovation: Use courtyards, underground circulation, and vertical ventilation to encourage exploration and serendipitous encounters. Key Concept: "Deep Conversations + Culture/History = Desegregation" The architecture acts as a "mirror," reflecting communal identity while inviting users to engage empathetically with one another.

Project description

Scope: The project transforms a central but underutilized site in Kyrenia into a dynamic public space combining: Courtyard Typology: Sloped pathways lead to a central courtyard, evoking traditional Cypriot gathering spaces. Underground Circulation: Subterranean routes with light wells create intrigue, linking historical narratives to modern movement. Vertical Ventilation: Inspired by Cumba windcatchers, passive cooling systems enhance comfort and sustainability. Pedestrian Loops: Overlapping pathways promote chance interactions, while outdoor extensions connect to the city’s fabric. Programmatic Elements: Cultural exhibition spaces Communal workshops and discussion forums Green terraces and shaded seating areas Underground parking with pedestrian-friendly access Design Drivers: Form Dynamism: Angular geometries respond to urban axes, creating visual interest. Light Penetration: Strategic apertures highlight historical artifacts and guide movement.

Space Frame Structure , 3d truss system Materials: Local stone and Ultra High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) Glass and perforated metal for modern interventions (light control/ventilation). Sustainability Features: Passive cooling via Cumba-inspired wind towers. Rainwater harvesting for courtyard irrigation. Photovoltaic panels on rooftops. Accessibility: Ramps and elevators integrated into vertical circulation. Tactile paving for visually impaired users. Scale: Site Area: ~25000 sqm Translation Note: Cumba: A traditional Cypriot architectural feature (projected bay windows) adapted here for ventilation and cultural symbolism.
