The "Green Horizons" project aims to address the rapid, unplanned development in Malabe, Sri Lanka, which has led to significant environmental degradation, including the loss of wetlands, reduced air and water quality, and increased flooding risks. By integrating sustainable practices and eco-friendly infrastructure, this project seeks to enhance the quality of life and well-being of Malabe's residents. The project leverages the natural ecosystem, particularly wetlands, to create a balanced urban environment that supports food security, reduces pollution, and provides recreational and cultural benefits.

Project description

This project focuses on several key areas to create a sustainable and livable urban environment in Malabe: Wetland Restoration: Restoration of 20% of Malabe's land, currently covered by wetlands, to improve food security, flood protection, and air quality. Development of the canal system for transportation and livelihood opportunities​. Sustainable Building and Infrastructure: Incorporation of green covers and use of renewable energy sources like solar power to reduce CO2 emissions and the urban heat island effect. Design of buildings and infrastructure to promote social cohesiveness, economic development, and increased land value​. Mixed-Use Development: Encouragement of water-dependent and water-enhanced recreational, public, residential, and commercial uses that complement the natural ecosystem. Enhancement of public access to natural resources like rivers and wetlands, ensuring harmony with ecological systems​. Community and Economic Benefits: Creation of a city identity that includes cultural and recreational facilities, fostering community pride and asset development. Development of a diverse neighbourhood with various housing types and transportation alternatives, including public transit, walking, and cycling.

Horizons verts : Développement urbain durable pour Malabe

Ce projet présente une approche visionnaire et multidimensionnelle pour relever les défis de l'urbanisation rapide et de la dégradation écologique à Malabe, au Sri Lanka. Ancrée dans une méthodologie de pensée systémique, la conception propose un cadre urbain qui tire parti de l'écosystème naturel des zones humides pour atténuer les inondations, améliorer la qualité de l'air et de l'eau, et soutenir la sécurité alimentaire - tout en améliorant l'habitabilité du tissu urbain. L'intervention est structurée autour de quatre stratégies clés : la restauration des zones humides, l'infrastructure verte, le zonage à usage mixte, et l'intégration socioculturelle. La réintégration de 20 % des zones humides existantes dans le réseau urbain, associée à un système de canaux amélioré pour le transport et les moyens de subsistance, témoigne d'une profonde compréhension de l'urbanisme axé sur le paysage. Le zonage des usages récréatifs, commerciaux et résidentiels en harmonie avec les corridors écologiques reflète une éthique de conception mature et sensible au climat. Les composantes architecturales et infrastructurelles - notamment les parkings couverts, la ventilation passive, les toits verts et l'utilisation de l'énergie solaire - sont intégrées de manière réfléchie dans le tissu spatial, plutôt qu'ajoutées en tant que caractéristiques techniques. En outre, l'accent mis sur la diversité des logements, l'accessibilité aux transports publics et la conception axée sur les piétons favorise l'inclusion sociale et la résilience à long terme. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un modèle de développement urbain bien documenté, écologiquement intelligent et socialement inclusif. Il constitue une référence élevée en matière de planification durable dans les contextes tropicaux à urbanisation rapide.
