Lumina

Project idea

Lumina is an inclusive, eco-futuristic social development center to improve social, physical and emotional skills of young children in Jakarta, Indonesia. Underprivileged children are known to have restricted access towards proper education and social development due to the minimum amount of available inclusive facilities in Indonesia. Yet, the country is ranked 4th with the most child population and among them only 30% went to special or inclusive schools. However, children have dreams to pursue and to achieve this, social interaction is required to reach out to people in the community.

Project description

A social development center is a catalyst that brings together the underprivileged and the “mainstream” children and form relationships as they perform desired activities. Lumina offers spaces for learning and socializing as well as the essential tools throughout the experience. It helps offer informal educational opportunities for the underprivileged and diminish the gap between social classes. Social architecture offers solutions to this problem by creating a space where children whom are part of the minority are able to feel included in the society, hoping to enhance the sense of unity among the communities and most importantly, let children be children.

Technical information

The concept of curvilinear gives a softer ambience, hence is psychologically more comfortable. Moreover, it is known that curvilinear structures invoke the feeling of joy, harmony & well-being. To complement the concept of social architecture, implementing curves and soft edges enhances curiosity and also functionally safer for young children. Open spaces and glass installations are the most suitable choices to take advantage of natural lighting. Natural lighting provides energy saving methods by eliminating the need to use artificial lighting. Psychologically, illuminating spaces with natural lighting is said to boost a person’s mood, helping people to be more productive, happier, healthier and calmer.

Lumina
