THE USEK ARENA

This project demonstrates an ambitious and socially responsive approach to one of the most pressing environmental crises of our time—plastic pollution. The proposal is commendable for its integration of industrial recycling infrastructure with civic engagement and public awareness. It presents a hybrid typology where architecture not only houses processes of production but also acts as a tool for education, community activation, and ecological advocacy. Comprehensive Vision: The project thoughtfully combines multiple strategies—recycling, upcycling, public education, and awareness—to address the plastic crisis holistically. The division into industrial and public zones is well-justified and contextually relevant. Technical Depth: The inclusion of distinct recycling processes for different plastic types, including PET, PS, and pyrolysis for unrecyclables, shows commendable research. Integration of passive cooling (wind catchers and earth air tunnels) and the ETP system further enhances the environmental credibility of the design. Worker-Centric Design: The prioritization of semi-outdoor breakout spaces, ventilation, fire safety, and worker amenities reflects a thoughtful human-centered approach to industrial architecture. Public Integration: The use of architectural elements like the double-helix ramp, 3R library, VR zones, and rooftop viewing decks invites the public to become part of the recycling narrative—effectively transforming the factory into a civic experience.

While the functional program is rich, the spatial articulation and architectural expression of this complexity could be strengthened. Consider developing stronger massing strategies, facade treatments, and sequencing of public experience to elevate it from an infrastructural facility to a memorable architectural landmark.
