Revitalization of the Glodok Pancoran Area with Sense of Place Approach and Urban Image Elements

Idea projektu

The idea of this project is to address the loss of sense of place in the Pancoran Glodok area due to modernization and commercialization, by revitalizing its physical character, architectural identity, historical and cultural significance, and community interactions. This is achieved through the strategic integration of city image elements, including the restoration of traditional shophouse façades, activation of key public nodes, improvement of pedestrian pathways, and the enhancement of cultural landmarks, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive urban environment that reconnects the community with its heritage.

The design approach incorporates city image elements, including district reorganization, activation of key nodes, enhancement of pedestrian-friendly edges, seamless path connectivity, and the reinforcement of significant landmarks to create a cohesive urban identity that reflects the area's historical and cultural essence.

Technické informácie

The revitalization of the Pancoran Glodok area focuses on restoring its sense of place through city image elements, ensuring the preservation of its cultural and historical identity. The district is enhanced by reorganizing the shophouse façades through a visual analysis to identify key architectural elements such as roofs, windows, and doors, ensuring that significant design features are retained. Nodes serve as focal points for community activities and are distributed across four key locations: Jalan Pancoran, an Art Gallery in front of Pasar Glodok, a plaza near Gang Gloria, and an Amphitheater in front of Pancoran Chinatown Point. Edges are defined by five footways, functioning as pedestrian pathways that separate public and private spaces while providing shade and supporting various user activities. The path system is designed for continuity, integrating with existing facilities and featuring a level surface between pedestrian and vehicular lanes, allowing the street to transform into a multifunctional space when closed to traffic at night. Lastly, the landmark is represented by a redesigned entrance gate with a minimalist aesthetic and a dominant red color, reinforcing the identity of Pancoran Glodok, complemented by an Art Gallery that serves as a central hub for history enthusiasts and cultural communities.

Revitalization of the Glodok Pancoran Area with Sense of Place Approach and Urban Image Elements

Dear Wenny Wenny, It has been a pleasure to review your project on the revitalization of Pancoran Glodok. Your approach to addressing the loss of sense of place due to modernization and commercialization is well-grounded in urban theory and cultural preservation strategies. The project successfully integrates key city image elements, incorporating nodes, edges, landmarks, and pathways in a way that reinforces the historical and cultural identity of the area. Strengths: _ Your project effectively addresses the challenges of urban transformation, particularly the impact of commercialization on traditional architecture and social dynamics. - The use of Qi and Wu Ji as conceptual frameworks demonstrates cultural sensitivity in design, ensuring that revitalization aligns with the values of the site. - Integration of public spaces, such as Chinatown Gate, the Art Gallery, and the Amphitheater, fosters community engagement and enhances urban vibrancy. - The pedestrian-oriented design, featuring five footways and continuous pathways, improves walkability and connectivity while supporting multifunctional public spaces. - The architectural identity, reflected in the restoration of traditional shophouse façades and the selection of elements such as roofs, windows, and doors, strengthens the district’s heritage preservation efforts. Areas for Improvement: . Visual hierarchy and representation: While your diagrams and maps effectively illustrate the design interventions, enhancing the differentiation of layers in sections and perspectives could improve clarity and readability. - Strengthening sustainability strategies: The project addresses long-term preservation, but incorporating green infrastructure—such as passive cooling strategies, rainwater collection, and permeable surfaces—could further strengthen its resilience and environmental impact. - Community participation process: While the project highlights existing cultural activities such as walking tours, an expanded participatory approach—including direct input from local vendors and residents—could further refine the interventions and ensure long-term success. Your project presents a well-thought-out and compelling approach to revitalizing Pancoran Glodok while maintaining its historical integrity. Further refinements in visual representation, sustainability strategies, and participatory planning could enhance its contribution to urban revitalization efforts. Congratulations on your thoughtful and inspiring work! Best regards, María Elizabeth Maldonado INSPIRELI AWARDS Jury
