RETURN THE PARK TO THE CITY

Idea projektu

The idea of this project arises from the need to recover a degraded and unused urban area, restoring its historical, social, and environmental value. The goal is to create a new meeting point for the community, promoting culture, sports, gastronomy, and sustainable mobility.

Popis projektu

This project is composed of three main areas: a ferrocultural hub (featuring an intermodal station, cultural center, and railway museum), a green strip with a linear public park and sports facilities, and a gastronomic and convention hub. A key axis of the project is the sequence of sunken plazas, located below the level of the railway tracks, which articulate the various cultural and recreational programs. These plazas are intersected perpendicularly and elevated by bridge-buildings that connect both sides of the site, functioning as new urban landmarks and elevated spaces for circulation and activity

Technické informácie

The construction combines restored existing structures (such as warehouses, the train station, etc.) with new buildings made of reinforced concrete, steel, and glass. The structural system of the bridge-buildings consists of a metal truss, allowing for long spans over the railway tracks. These buildings are connected by vertical circulation cores located on either side, which also generate sunken plazas at ground level. The building envelope, or “skin,” is composed of metal sunshades and glass panels, featuring an irregular curvature that adds dynamism to the overall composition. In addition, the rectangular volume of the building includes a longitudinal break that disrupts linearity and enriches the interior spatial experience.

RETURN THE PARK TO THE CITY

The project offers a highly effective and socially rooted urban vision with a thoughtful reuse of abandoned railroad infrastructure as a public park and cultural route. The multi-scale strategy, ranging from metropolitan transport to architecture, is particularly effective, demonstrating a profound understanding of how large infrastructure systems can be repurposed as public space. The project is highly effective in dealing with urban fragmentation, a damaged cultural identity, and a transportation disconnection problem through landscape, cultural initiatives, and transport connectivity. The architectural interventions in this project are subtle but effective, enabling a public park to act as a flexible urban framework rather than a monadic object.

One possible recommendation could be to make the phasing and implementation strategy even clearer. In the case of the large-scale nature of the project and the level of infrastructure involved, the inclusion of incremental steps for development could make the feasibility of the transformation easier to understand.
