Al-Idrisi Geographical Exploration Museum

Idea projektu

This academic project, developed during the fourth year – first semester, explores a contemporary interpretation of the journeys of the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi. The design concept is inspired by the mountainous paths and coastal routes he traveled, where natural topography became a key driver in shaping the museum’s spatial and architectural language. The museum focuses on presenting Al-Idrisi’s scientific and geographical journey—from exploration and observation to documentation and mapmaking—through a progressive circulation path that reflects the notion of travel itself. Organic forms inspired by carved mountains, natural materiality, and carefully controlled lighting were employed to emphasize depth, movement, and gradual spatial discovery. The project aims to create an immersive museum experience that integrates interior architecture, visual storytelling, and spatial sequencing, translating geographical knowledge into a sensory and educational journey for visitors.

Popis projektu

The project focuses on designing a Geography Museum inspired by the shape of mountains. The museum allows visitors to experience the spirit of exploration, just as Al-Idrisi did when he traveled through mountains and seas to discover new regions. The design includes exhibition halls, interactive displays, educational zones, and visual storytelling spaces that help visitors understand geography in an engaging and immersive way. The project aims to increase geographical awareness, encourage exploration, and provide an informative experience for visitors of all ages.

Technické informace

The museum is designed to reflect mountain landscapes, creating an immersive environment that connects visitors with the spirit of geographical discovery. The building includes exhibition halls, interactive zones, educational spaces, and service areas. The design considers circulation flow, accessibility for people with disabilities, proper lighting systems, and ventilation. Exhibition spaces are designed to accommodate digital screens, interactive installations, and physical models. Materials are selected for durability and ease of maintenance, while lighting and display systems are used to enhance the educational experience. The project follows safety standards, clear wayfinding, and technical requirements suitable for a public cultural building.

Al-Idrisi Geographical Exploration Museum

The Geography Museum project inspired by the journeys of Muhammad al-Idrisi represents an interesting attempt to combine historical narrative with the language of contemporary interior architecture. The author clearly uses the metaphor of a mountainous landscape as the main element shaping the space, creating a coherent spatial concept based on the idea of travel and the gradual discovery of knowledge. Particular attention should be given to the way the visitor is guided through a sequence of spaces that reflects the process of exploration—from observation, through documentation, to mapmaking. The use of organic forms, varied lighting, and elements of visual storytelling supports the creation of an immersive museum experience. The project also demonstrates an awareness of functional and technical aspects, such as clear circulation, accessibility for people with disabilities, and the use of interactive exhibition elements. Overall, it can be assessed as a well-considered concept for an educational public space in which interior architecture becomes a tool for narrating geography and the idea of discovering the world.

As a recommendation for further development, it may be beneficial to slightly calm some of the formal solutions in selected areas of the project. In certain moments, simplifying or softening the interior form could allow the architectural space to function more as a background for the exhibition rather than competing with it, which would help strengthen the clarity of the educational message.
