Kilim commercial store design

Project idea

KILIIM is a commercial retail store dedicated to showcasing and preserving the art of Egyptian kilim craftsmanship. The project aims to create an immersive shopping experience that highlights the cultural, artistic, and historical value of handmade kilims while supporting local artisans and promoting traditional Egyptian heritage. Through a combination of retail, display, and interactive spaces, visitors are encouraged to engage with the craftsmanship behind each piece and develop a deeper appreciation for this enduring cultural craft.

Project description

KILIIM is a contemporary retail space inspired by the rich heritage of Egyptian kilim weaving and traditional craftsmanship. The design reinterprets the textures, colors, and geometric patterns of handcrafted kilims within a modern architectural language, creating an immersive cultural experience that celebrates local identity. The spatial journey is organized around a central monumental staircase inspired by the terraced forms and ceremonial stairways of ancient Egyptian architecture. Acting as both a circulation element and a visual focal point, the staircase symbolizes movement through layers of history and craftsmanship, guiding visitors between different levels while creating a sense of procession and discovery. Arched openings, textured surfaces, and earthy materials reflect the architectural character of traditional Egyptian spaces, while vibrant red accents are drawn from the colors commonly found in kilim textiles. The interplay of light, shadow, and materiality enhances the handcrafted atmosphere, allowing visitors to experience the store as more than a retail environment—it becomes a celebration of Egyptian culture, artistry, and storytelling. Through the fusion of heritage-inspired elements and contemporary design, KILIIM creates a balanced environment where tradition and modernity coexist, reflecting the timeless value of Egyptian craftsmanship.

Technical information

The project is designed as a two-story commercial retail store with a total footprint of approximately 36 m × 32 m, organized around a central circulation core and a feature staircase connecting both levels. The ground floor accommodates the main display areas, reception, cashier, packaging, storage, and administrative functions, while the first floor provides additional product displays, seating areas, and customer interaction spaces. The design emphasizes efficient circulation, clear zoning, accessibility, and visual connectivity between floors. Materials such as stone, wood, textiles, and decorative metal elements are selected to reflect the handcrafted nature of Egyptian kilim production while ensuring durability and functionality within a commercial environment. The lighting strategy combines natural and artificial illumination to enhance product presentation and create a warm, inviting atmosphere.
