Havelock House is one of Canberra's last pieces of social housing located in the city on Northbourne Avenue. Students have 3 months to develop a design that will increase density to the current building. Although the architecture is not heritage listed the idea behind the building and what it has brought to the community is, as such students must be respectful of the site.
The response to the brief I took was to use the site analysis to extrude towers of different heights and widths to accomodate long term and short term guests. Surrounding the building is a veil. This veil is designed to create a protective layer towards residents while also creating an artistic and intriguing facade to an area which is predominantly associated with linear hotels and commercial buildings.
The original Havelock house is to stay its classic red brick as a response to the original uses of the building and to respect the heritage element of this project. The extruding residential towers are a dark grey wood which will age and respond to Canberra's greying and autumnal trees which surround the site. The veil will be constructed of overlapping white steel wire rope, this will create a light aspect the veil as to not overwhelm the residents.
Dear Rebecca Sturt
To begin with, I would like to thank the INSPIRELI AWARD structure for the honor you accord me to my person providing an analysis (comment) on the draft Rebecca Sturt _ Reinventing Havelock.
Thank you very much for participating in the INSPIRELI EDUCATION International Student Competition. We very appreciate your time and effort to produce this excellent design work.
In many countries, the shortage of housing in general and social (economic) housing in particular exceeds all expectations. This is the scarcity of social housing provided annually in exchange for the growing demand.
The design aims to achieve building blocks with dynamic exciting formations that achieve the attraction for those wishing to live in social housing and you have succeeded in providing this attractive residential architecture by creating a veil from a rope of overlapping white steel wires that achieved high privacy for the population, which used it in creating additional outdoor living spaces with high privacy.
The intervention to review the design was clear to you with the aim of improving the quality of the dwelling, and provided a clear plan that helped raise the level of the dwelling.
Architectural criticism:
I also wish I could see in the design new directions within the framework of the application of sustainability standards is to seek to maintain and rehabilitate existing buildings and develop existing neighborhoods, so that they are environmentally friendly through solutions to reduce energy consumption and develop the green area
Best Regards.
