Lights of Life: Schindler's Ark & Sustainable Village
Project idea
This factory was a refuge for many Jewish Holocaust survivors. Our idea was to represent the lives saved through lights, as a representation of the lives saved. As opposed to the use of concrete or other materials in tributes to the dead.
We seek to relate the existing building with all the other elements of the land. We incorporated an access walkway showing a monument of light posts representing the lives saved, and sought to reflect that light in a reflecting pool.
We decided to use transparent elements (glass and white structures) to express transparency, use of natural light and differentiate what is new from what is heritage. We repeat this aspect in each site of the proposal
Lights of Life: Schindler's Ark & Sustainable Village
Dear team,
This is a moving and precise project. Your decision to focus on life rather than loss to design with light as a symbol of survival rather than death is a powerful conceptual shift. It reframes the memory of the Holocaust through the lens of resilience, and that choice is both respectful and spatially generative.
The project navigates a difficult context with clarity. The integration between new elements and the industrial heritage is handled with a light touch. The transparent and white structural components set a clear distinction from the original masonry, while still working in dialogue with it. The light field and reflecting pool introduce a ceremonial quality without theatricality. The result feels grounded.
Architecturally, the proposal is consistent. The material strategy is coherent across the different scales of intervention. The use of wood, vegetation, and greenhouse structures in the housing and productive landscapes shows a careful layering of domesticity, labor, and remembrance.
Some aspects could be developed further. The large open plaza reads well in images, but its climatic and acoustic conditions might deserve more attention. Also, the transition between the memorial walk and the museum interior could benefit from more spatial tension or pause. How is that moment marked in the body?
Overall, this is a thoughtful and dignified work. You approached memory not with monumentality but with light, community, and continuity. That takes architectural discipline and care. This is important work and it shows.
Congratulations on choosing such a meaningful and challenging theme, and addressing it with clarity, depth, and maturity. This is not just a strong academic proposal it is a thoughtful and timely architectural response, and you have carried it with real care and skill.
