Project idea
Roots of Life is a mixed-use housing complex located in Al Azbakeya, Downtown Cairo, on the plot of the Old Continental Hotel. The project is inspired by the memory of the site and its historical urban value. The main idea is to reconnect the new building with the existing context by completing the old wall and transforming it into part of the architectural identity of the project. The concept focuses on creating open courts, internal community spaces, and active roofs that bring life back to the dense downtown fabric. Instead of being only a residential block, the project becomes a living urban environment where residents can meet, interact, work, relax, and practice different activities within a connected community.
Project description
The project consists of residential units, commercial areas, open courts, shared community spaces, and roof activities. The ground floor includes shops and public functions that connect the project with the surrounding streets and support the active character of Downtown Cairo. The residential floors are organized around internal courtyards to provide natural light, ventilation, and social interaction between residents. The open courts act as breathing spaces inside the dense urban block, while bridges and terraces create visual and physical connections between different parts of the building. The roofs are used as active communal spaces, including green areas, seating zones, pergolas, and activity areas for residents. The project aims to create a balanced relationship between private housing, public life, and community interaction.
Technical information
The project is designed as a mixed-use residential building with a structural system suitable for housing and commercial functions. The building includes a basement level for services and parking, ground-floor commercial spaces, repeated residential floors, and accessible roof areas used for activities. The design depends on internal courtyards to improve natural lighting and cross ventilation. The façades combine solid and void elements, balconies, terraces, and shaded openings to respond to the urban context and climate. Materials are chosen to relate to Downtown Cairo’s architectural character, using warm tones, masonry-like finishes, glass openings, shading elements, and green roof surfaces. The project also respects the memory of the Old Continental Hotel site by completing the old wall and integrating it with the new architectural composition, creating a connection between heritage, housing, and contemporary urban life.
