The Dignity Garden

Project idea

The Dexterity Centre is inspired directly by the Grow X Dignity and Eat X Dignity programs, reflecting the natural cycle of food. Fresh produce is grown, used in meals, and then any food waste is decomposed into fertilizer, which returns nutrients to the soil for growing more plants. This closed-loop concept emphasizes sustainability, environmental awareness, and the connection between nature and daily life, creating a learning environment where youth can experience the full cycle of food production and consumption. The design also responds to the site context, following the unique shape of the site and its north-facing orientation, which optimizes natural light and ventilation, enhancing comfort and reducing energy consumption. The building is designed as a green building to align with the growing programs, incorporating sustainable features that support plant growth, reduce environmental impact, and create a healthier learning environment. The industrial aesthetic complements the surrounding context, giving the building a raw, functional, and inspiring character.

Project description

The Dexterity Centre is located in Gombak, Malaysia, with a built-up area of approximately 2,200 sqm, spanning four storeys, including a mezzanine and a green roof. It is designed to accommodate Grow X Dignity and Eat X Dignity, integrating hands-on learning with real-world experiences. The building is designed as a green building, reflecting the gardening and sustainability focus of the programs, and adopts an industrial aesthetic to harmonize with the surrounding industrial buildings. It features an open-plan atrium, creating visual connectivity and encouraging interaction across all floors. The overall form responds to the unique shape of the site, providing a functional and cohesive structure that supports learning, creativity, and community engagement.

Technical information
