DUNE | STEAM SCHOOL

Project idea

Traditional STEM schools often focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but may lack a strong emphasis on the arts and creative disciplines. This gap can hinder interdisciplinary thinking, which is essential for innovation. My project aims to address this by transforming an existing STEM school into a STEAM school—incorporating the Arts to foster creativity, critical thinking, and a more engaging learning environment. Moreover, South Sinai has a unique cultural and natural landscape that can be integrated into the educational experience. The project also tackles environmental challenges by incorporating sustainable design inspired by local nature, ensuring energy efficiency and a comfortable microclimate.

Project description

The project consists of several main parts such as the classroom building, the administrative building, the Fablab building, the library and restaurant integrated into one building, and a building for student housing, each building separate from the other for privacy, a workshops building, a proposal hall building, an outdoor open theater, and an exhibition for students’ artistic and sculptural works outside.

Technical information

The project incorporates an environmentally friendly Structure Wall System that integrates locally sourced and sustainable materials to enhance efficiency, comfort, and insulation. The wall system consists of multiple layers, each serving a specific function: Compressed Earth Block (CEB): Provides structural strength and stability. Environmentally sustainable with excellent thermal mass properties. Papyrus Insulation: Offers effective thermal and acoustic insulation. 100% biodegradable material. Hemp-Lime Insulation: Helps sequester carbon, reducing the overall carbon footprint. Clay Plaster: Regulates indoor humidity levels. Stores and slowly releases heat. Air Layer: Reduces thermal bridging. Acts as an additional insulation layer. Performance Metrics: Wall Thickness: 35 cm U-Value: 0.136 W/(m²K) (high insulation efficiency) Carbon Footprint: 15.5 kg CO₂e per m² (low environmental impact) This wall system optimizes thermal performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability while maintaining structural integrity and environmental responsibility.
